SMS Homepage Blog Mayor Nickels' Self-Incriminating Statements The MTrans Letter

Below is a letter dated August 2, 2005 sent to the Monorail Authority by MTrans conveying their interest in participating in a re-bid of the Seattle Monorail Project.  This letter mentions that MTrans had built themselves a brand new 5.4 mile 11 station Monorail system in the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for less than $8 million dollars US a Monorail-mile.  This was at a time when the SPMA was telling Seattle that they needed more than $150 million a Monorail-mile to build.  Why didn't the SPMA embrace the MTrans letter and acknowledge the $8 million a Monorail-mile cost figure and either DIY build or re-bid the SMP?  It just didn't make sense, uless the SPMA was on a path to scuttle the Seattle Monorail Project by hook or crook despite their voter mandate.

Dear Ms Hill

We have been informed that the 14-mile Green Line may be going for re-procurement and wish to express to the Board of Seattle Monorail Project our interest to participate in this prestigious project.

MTrans Holdings Sdn Bhd is a Malaysian company that has successfully implemented the 5.4-mile KL Monorail System with 11 stations in the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur with locally manufactured monorail vehicles. Since started revenue operation on 31st August 2003, it has now carried 25 million passengers.

The total construction cost for KL Monorail System was USD42 million. We understand that the system and environment requirements for the Green Line are different from those in Kuala Lumpur, we nonetheless are confident that we can structure a solution more cost-effective than what has been presented to you.

We are keen to assist Seattle Monorail Project to realize the Green Line which we think will be an icon to the City of Seattle, just as the existing Seattle Monorail that gave us the inspiration and courage to build the KL Monorail.

We would be much obliged if you could let us know how to proceed to the next step for us to participate in this re-procurement exercise.

With our warmest regards

Yours truly,
